Iconic Armada portrait of Queen Elizabeth I saved by the public (theweek.co.uk).
“One of the most famous portraits in British history will be owned by the public for the first time after a fundraising campaign raised more than £10m to purchase it. The Armada portrait of Queen Elizabeth I is being sold by descendants of Sir Francis Drake, who is thought to have commissioned it in 1590, and it will go on display in Greenwich in October. … The artist of the Armada portrait remains unidentified, although earlier art historians have ascribed it to George Gower or Nicholas Hilliard, the Art Newspaper reports.”
“Saved” as in meaning staying in Britain of course rather than joining London Bridge in Arizona (dailymail.co.uk) or such.
Trivia: I was born and grew up in the town in which Queen Liz gave that historic speech to her troops as the Spanish Armada approched—of course, some time, several centuries after—which helped consolidate her small kingdom threatened by grave internal divisions and allowing it to exert itself vigorously as a major European power in politics, commerce, and the arts after, due much to its own later navel power: Queen Elizabeth I, speech to the troops at Tilbury (luminarium.org).
Updated 13th October 2017.
Saved, and now cleaned:
Armada portrait of Elizabeth I returns after “spectacular” restoration (theguardian.com).
“One of the most recognisable portraits in British history is returning to public view transformed after a six-month restoration project to remove centuries of retouching, grime and varnish. ‘You can read the painting better; it is more spectacular and, actually, you are now looking at something which is more akin to the impact it would have had in the Elizabethan period.’ The conservation was carried out by Elizabeth Hamilton-Eddy, senior paintings conservator at Royal Museums Greenwich. She was given a separate studio and the opportunity to work on the painting with no other work distractions. ‘I was able to sit and concentrate on this one marvellous painting for a full six months,’ she said. ‘It was wonderful—the opportunity of a lifetime.’”
Meanwhile, the Lil’ Englanders Queen Liz I was instrumental in defining still can’t are still burning their own negotiation ships attempting Brexit with regards St. Theresa’s bluff with a low pair (thisisnocave.blogspot.co.uk, 12th Oct. 2017) that is fooling no one not thing Rhodesia could still be saved.

The Guerrilla Girls will unveil a new artwork interrogating sexism of European art scene at Whitechapel Gallery (standard.co.uk).
“Feminist art activists The Guerrilla Girls will create a new artwork to be displayed in Whitechapel Gallery this October. The group have been confronting sexism in art galleries for over thirty years, and will use their commission at Whitechapel Gallery to interrogate the European art scene. In 1986, they created a poster called It’s Even Worse In Europe; their new piece will aim to find out if this is still the case. … A famous poster made by the group in 1989 asked ‘Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?’ after finding that less than 5% of the artists displayed in the New York museum were women, but 85% of the museum’s nudes were female.”
Indeed, and sincerely respectful as I am to their undoubted talent they are more than welcome to even up the score, for, I fear, even though last time I looked gallery attendance is pretty equally male and female, market forces and that distasteful yet very much there thing called law of supply and demand—a demand which there obviously is—may be their real enemy…

3,200 people strip off in Hull for artist’s huge installation (dailymail.co.uk).
“Thousands of people have stripped and been painted blue as they starred in a huge installation to celebrate Hull’s relationship with the sea. Hull City Council said 3,200 people took part in the event—the largest of its kind ever to be staged in the UK by New York-based artist Spencer Tunick. … The hundreds who gathered at dawn were daubed with four shades of blue body paint in celebration of Hull’s maritime heritage and then posed for a series of site specific installations around some of the city’s best known historic locations.”
Exposed hull engagement undoubtedly causing a primary or even a secondary swell for some and a squirt tsunami for cosplay Avatar fans. 😜

The whole truth about Van Gogh’s ear, and why his “mad genius” is a myth (theguardian.com).
“Madness terrified Vincent van Gogh, yet he also wondered if it was inseparable from artistic genius. … For the modern age, it is Vincent himself who embodies that fatal creative malady. Yet, a new exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam questions what it sees as a romantic myth about the Dutch artist, who lethally shot himself in a cornfield at Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890. Using a combination of art, written documents and a severely rusted revolver that was found by a farmer in 1960 in that same cornfield, On the Verge of Insanity argues that far from inspiring his art, Van Gogh’s illness was an impediment to his talent. It stopped him working for long periods, and he heroically defied its totally uncreative effects to create some of the most powerful art in history.”
“Impediment” which is seemingly as much directed at him being unable to fulfil his potential than at the manner in which an odd, intense and deeply troubled socially awkward friendless loner who did not want to be alone was viewed during in his lifetime rather than with the affection and adoration that is heaped on him long after his recognition.

No need for supercomputers: Russian scientists suggest a PC to solve complex quantum mechanics problems tens of times faster than with massive supercomputers (sciencedaily.com).
“Senior researchers Vladimir Pomerantcev and Olga Rubtsova, working under the guidance of Professor Vladimir Kukulin (SINP MSU), were able to use on an ordinary desktop PC with GPU to solve complicated integral equations of quantum mechanics—previously solved only with the powerful, expensive supercomputers. According to Vladimir Kukulin, the personal computer does the job much faster: in 15 minutes it is doing the work requiring normally 2-3 days of the supercomputer time.”
And at mere fraction of the cost replaced seemigly each year with exponential performance indicative of Moore’s law (Wikipedia) proof that the new electronics “disposeable age” backs the PC for similar reasons it won the PC vs MAC/quantity vs quality battle now being repeated with Android that finally turned Apple into making branded quality carriable tablets, pods and phones and away from it’s traditional base in graphics and video production (Oct. 2011).
