Leslie Grantham dead: EastEnders legend who played ‘Dirty Den’ dies aged 71 (standard.co.uk).
Without thankfully being raised from the dead again to try and have the aging gangster return to Albert Square and the Queen Vic to bring something new back to the ailing soap storylines with something old and somewhat past its time, until he sorta shut that door with comments made about other cast members while doing… stuff on a webcam with a undercover reporter from his dressing room.
Grantham read out the opening line in the first episode of EastEnders in 1985, later receiving the nickname “Dirty” after getting his adopted teenage daughter’s 16-year-old friend pregnant.
Causing much fury for good and for bad for the new soap in the tabloids at the time in that he had been convicted of the murder of a taxi driver he had attempted to rob while with the British Army in Germany.
EastEnders' executive consultant John Yorke paid tribute with a statement saying “Everyone at EastEnders is deeply saddened to hear that Leslie has passed away.”. Seemingly he had been seriously unwell for some time and had returned from Bulgaria where he had been living under the care of doctors.
