End of the licence fee: BBC to back radical overhaul of how it is funded (independent.co.uk).
“In a speech to staff at Broadcasting House, Lord Hall is expected to indicate the Corporation’s backing for a broadcasting levy that would apply to every household, regardless of whether they have a television … [saying] ‘Both proposals have the same goal in mind: adapting the licence fee for the internet age.’”
So in other words we will be paying for an institution rather than a service. That’s the internet age that pays for itself via advertising and appealing to “American taste-makers” is it?

Comments: The Sister raised an interesting point asking why, adverse to advertising but with programming much respected abroad, does the corporation not offer a subscription service to the rest of the world for iPlayer usage, a key “internet age” reason presented for the overhaul, to help provide funding.
It’s musical break time.
