Miley Cyrus on her Black Mirror episode, Glastonbury and Lil Nas X (bbc.co.uk).
Miley Cyrus says her upcoming episode of Black Mirror is “outrageously out there and dark” and reflects the music industry.
Playing the role of a purple-haired pop star called Ashley O in “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too”, in the last episode of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian high-tech, near future satirisation of modern society anthology’s three episode fifth season (digitalspy.com) premiering on the 5th June on Netflix, a shorter run than the six episodes of previous seasons due to the interactive “Netflix event” episode “Bandersnatch” aired on Netflix back in December.
On the surface, Ashley has the perfect life for her adoring fans but—being Black Mirror—her character has hidden struggles.
And seemingly having her mind placed into robo-doll devices mimicking the singer’s personality—presumably with technology akin to the “Cookie” simulation of a person’s consciousness (thewrap.com, Jan. 2018) first seen in season three’s “White Christmas”—allowing lonely teenagers to connect to their favourite pop star but seemingly getting the more troubled part of her real personality too that does not live up to her plastic pop star persona created by her aunt-cum-manager.
Although fewer in number with each year away from Hannah Montana, many of her elder middle-aged and senior fans often have their own troubled parts of personality on display too while congregating in ManOChat and Chapopolis of choice to avoid loneliness while telling each other they are pulling one off.

Halsey claiming an “existential crisis” over the “Black Mirror” episode starring Miley Cyrus, has people connected with the Netflix hit show laughing their asses off … TMZ has learned.
Although it should perhaps be pointed out that her claim of an “existential crisis” was a couple of somewhat ambiguous tweets, which to some may have closer to either satire or sarcasm and more a case of social media taking things literally when it suits the invention of a story, with Celebsville’s town crier ever-eager to indulge:
TMZ has seen emails between production execs connected with the much buzzed about episode and they say Ashley O is obviously not based on Halsey. They note that even before shooting the episode … writers had publicly said they wanted “someone like Miley” to play the character, but never dreamed MC would do it.
And “exec” going on to say that Black Mirror co-creator and writer Charlie Brooker was “only vaguely aware” of Halsey and that “and if we get asked about it in an interview we’ll cheerily confirm that”, with a cheeky reincarnation of blue cartoon piss-taking bear Waldo from series two (imdb.com) seemingly having at least a say on matters where thinking someone is perhaps fishing to sue, with said “exec” suggesting it’s a shameful attempt at self-promotion.
Despite the fact that the queen of New Americana seemingly quite obviously had her tongue firmly in cheek rather than her nose buried in Sartre’s Being and Nothingness:
She went on to point out her real name is Ashley and joked, “If I die they killed me.”
Halsey has existential crisis over resemblance to Miley Cyrus’ Black Mirror character (comicbook.com).
Now, this is Twitter we’re talking about. It’s a platform where people often have over-the-top or hyperbolic reactions to things so one probably shouldn’t read too much into Halsey’s “crisis”, but at the same time, it had to be unnerving to see Cyrus’ Ashley O as Halsey herself is not only known for her colorful hair—and she’s also had a hairstyle that is very similar to Ashley O’s—and is also a music megastar, but her real name? It’s Ashley. Halsey’s real name is Ashley Frangipane.
Indeed, Twitter audience often taking said things more literally than anyone on the “they take things so literally” autism spectrum and likely bullied for it could ever possibly imagine—or not, at least according to psychologists (autismsupportnetwork.com)—but perhaps not quite the “hyperbolic reactions” some might imagine from devout 90’s Industrial rock aficionados considering the now-free-to-musically-express-as-she-pleases Ashley O passed off, in the episode at least, Trent Reznor’s “Head Like A Hole” as “her song” at the episodes end.
