ABC cancels ‘Roseanne’ after star’s racist Twitter rant (cnn.com).

Roseanne Barr
“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Being the revived Roseanne which had premiered to huge ratings just three months ago for which Orange Don called her to congratulate—and take some of the credit himself (thehill.com, Apr. 2018). And with ABC being a subsidiary of Disney:

Disney CEO Bob Iger added on Twitter that “there was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.”

And Barr’s talent agency ICM Partners dropped her too.

The cancellation has apparently “stunned Hollywood” and “industry veterans said they’ve never seen anything quite like it”, which is a shame because many non-industry and not-necessarily-so-veteran could clearly see the writing the normalisation of racism and bigotry Orange Don’s campaign and election had wrote on the wall, with studio now keen to wash it off.

Barr has a long history of controversial tweets, including posts about pro-Trump conspiracy theories. But even by her low standards, Tuesday’s remarks were egregious.

Indeed, being rather repulsive suggesting “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj”, “vj” being Valerie Jarrett, a female top former aide to President Obama.

Barr quickly deleted tweet, apologised and then quickly decided not to tweet again by leaving Twitter, but demonstrating the harm this type of “triggering the libs” (knowyourmeme.com) can have not just on those targeted but on the bigots themself in today’s ever-connected, ever-tracked and never forgotten social networked society; and not exactly following through on the #MAGA promises Orange Don had made for American workers—at least those in Hollywood:

But there will be ripple effects from the cancellation. At least 200 jobs will be affected, according to industry sources.

But with fellow cast members as disgusted with Barr’s comments too, and indeed, in case of Emma Kenney who played Roseanne’s granddaughter on the reboot, tweeted that she was in the process of quitting the show when she found out that it had been canceled.

And Sara Gilbert, who plays Barr’s daughter on the ABC sitcom, tweeted that Barr’s comments are “abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show.”

.:: Update ::.

Roseanne blames racist tweet on sleeping pills (bbc.co.uk).

The comedian said on Twitter her offensive post was a result of “ambien tweeting”—although she has since removed this comment. Ambien is a sedative used as a sleeping aid.

Surly a job for an agent there to ensure stars do not tweet while under the influence in the same way that they would not drive. Saying that, job for somewhat at the White House to stop Orange Don letting rip in the early hours on Twitter when he’s got a bad case of wind (thisisnocave.blogspot.com, Dec. 2017). And not wanting to shoulder the blame either:

Ambien maker responds to Roseanne Barr: ‘Racism is not a known side effect’ (theguardian.com).

The drug manufacturer Sanofi felt compelled to clarify that one of its most popular medications, the sedative Ambien, does not cause racism. They tweeted that “while all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication”.

Indeed, in the same way that blaming it on the drink is more often than not a cop-out for held but hidden opinions too.

And not sparred her wrath for traitors—perhaps to be later blamed on sleeping pills too:

‘You throw ME under the bus. Nice!’: Roseanne goes after her TV family after they denounce her racist remarks while suggesting ABC dumped her for being pro-Trump—but admits she ‘f***ed up’ and blames Ambien (dailymail.co.uk).

In a return to Twitter, hours after claiming she was quitting the social media platform for good when her eponymous hit show was cancelled, Barr flipped from apologizing for her “bad joke” about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to railing against her critics.

With the inevitable term “witch-hunt” being used.

And steering it into hypocrisy on the left conspiracy territory used alt-white right feels threatened where really it could only go:

#IstandWithRoseanne

Roseanne Barr’s new stream of abuse: Star retweets hundreds of abusive comments after blaming Ambien for her racist remark about Valerie Jarrett and claiming ‘I thought she was white’; (dailymail.co.uk).

Indeed, she “thought she was white” and doubtless many just found out that they are a monkeys uncle or auntie (idioms.online).

Among hundreds of retweets Barr reposted comments including an image of Jarrett’s face next to a character from Planet of the Apes, a fake tweet claiming Jarrett had said she wanted to make America more Islamic, and a doctored image of Whoopie Goldberg wearing a t-shirt of Donald Trump shooting himself in the head.

Lets hope she can tell Whoopie isn’t white.

And stepping in to give Presidential take:

White House comes out fighting on Roseanne racism row (bbc.co.uk).

On Wednesday, President Trump broke his silence on Barr, who has been one of his most outspoken supporters.

He jabbed on Twitter at Disney chief executive Bob Iger, who apologised to African-American former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett after Barr’s Monday night tweet likening her to an ape.

Although to be honest it was all more about himself and how hard done by he feels that he didn’t get an apology and needs to remind all just how mean and nasty the establishment is to him in his position as a very important public figure rather than just exerting his manliness and taking on the chin the sort of insults he often hands out in diatribes on Twitter when he wakes up with that bad wind.

He never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC.
Valerie Jarrett

Perhaps he could take a lesson on dealing with such in political life from Valerie Jarrett:

Valerie Jarrett responds to Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet (cbsnews.com).

“I think we have to turn it into a teaching moment. I’m fine,” Jarrett said during a town hall on “everyday racism,” hosted by MSNBC Tuesday night.

Then she turned the conversation toward the incidents of racism that occur every day, out of the public eye.

Roseanne exits The Conners, and she is not happy about it (theguardian.com).

The Conners being ABC’s Roseanne-without-Roseanne spin-off allowing the other cast members to keep their job while Barr’s Orange Don inspired exemplary attempt at normalising racism leaves her sitting on the couch in a #MAGA hat with her Twitter folowing as her only audience.

One of television’s best-known families returned on Tuesday without its matriarch, as the character of feisty Roseanne Conner was killed off through an accidental opioid overdose.

“Opioid” rather than Ambien which according to her got her into all this trouble, and following through on the opioid addiction stemming from knee pain storyline already introduced but leaving Barr understandably unappreciative of the plot twist, saying in a statement that the “opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.”

In the first episode of The Conners, the family is shown struggling to come to terms with the death of Roseanne from what is first thought to be a heart attack but is later revealed to be an overdose.

The original Roseanne show appealing for its “realistic portrayal of working-class life” and its revival in March was ABC’s biggest hit drawing 18 million viewers per episode, but can the spin off be as popular? Certainly unlikely with those self-identified deplorable hard working class believing it should again be normal to call a spade a spade, like in the good ol’ days:

The Conners ratings are a lot lower than Roseanne premiere (ew.com).

ABC’s Roseanne-without-Roseanne spin-off The Conners couldn’t come anywhere close to the blockbuster premiere rating of its predecessor, yet still had a very strong number that led Tuesday night in the ratings.

Seemingly on a par with the revival series finale, and certainly much better than nothing for ratings “rough sledding” ABC.
