The UK Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith claimed yesterday he could get by on £53 a week in benefits he if he "had to". An online petition is calling on him to try.
• Prove it! 240,000 call on Iain Duncan Smith to live on £53 a week (independent.co.uk).
The online petition is hosted at www.change.org. If you are a UK resident who would like to see him try, click on over and sign.
Updated 3rd April 2013.
• Iain Duncan Smith petition breaks records (news.uk.msn.com).
"A further petition on the subject has now been posted on the government’s e-petition site … It has had more than 4,000 signatures so far—but if it reaches 100,000 signatures it will be considered for debate in the House of Commons."
• Iain Duncan Smith calls petition for him to live on £53 a week a complete stunt (guardian.co.uk)
"This is a complete stunt which distracts attention from the welfare reforms which are much more important and which I have been working hard to get done. I have been unemployed twice in my life so I have already done this. I know what it is like to live on the breadline."
A complete stunt but he’s no Evel Knievel willing to show how it’s done because he’s already jumped that canyon I guess.
