Joan Rivers dies aged 81. She “shot from the lip” and paved the way for today’s comediennes (telegraph.co.uk).
“For fifty years she’d been barbecuing whole herds of sacred cows. Way back in the 60’s, a time when women were expected to be decorative and demure, Joan started telling the truth.”
I may not have enjoyed some of her more personal barbs, but nor do I from any comedian, but I’d be an absolute hypocrite to think for an instant my caricatures are any less reprehensible if never-ever capable of hitting the mark like she did. Perhaps there is some verisimilitude to those parodying pop culture in what she told biographer Gerald Nachman:
“Maybe I started it. We’re a very gossipy culture. All we want to know now is private lives”
