Missing Saudi journalist ‘recorded his own death on his Apple Watch with moments of his interrogation, torture and killing sent to his phone and the iCloud’ (dailymail.co.uk).
So, indeed, the terribly expensive smartwatch proved itself actually real-world useful for something other than, in potential at least, monitoring your seated fitness, getting important weather updates, using as a flashlight or helping you not understanding what was said via Bluetooth speaker because of shit audio quality (gottabemobile.com, Sept. 2018) rather than answering a call on your expensive iPhone laying next to you instead.
Although there are several unanswered problems with the story so far with regards him “reportedly switched on recording function before going into Saudi embassy” and the audio recorded of his “interrogation, torture and killing” being sent to both his phone and to iCloud.
Security forces leading the investigation into [self-exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s] disappearance found the audio file on the phone he had left with his fiancée, according to [Turkish newspaper Sabah].
With it seemingly unclear how “the file transferred from the watch to the phone” without some amazing Bluetooth connection needed to sync watch with phone in car with fiancée and with regards that The Washington Post journalist’s “assailants tried to hack into the watch with multiple failed password attempts before using his fingerprint to unlock it and delete some files” with an Apple representative saying that “unlocking an Apple Watch using fingerprint verification is not a feature of the device” before presumably sending a dozen emails a day to email given in an attempt to persuade to purchase other devices or services in the Apple ecosphere.
Note: Having never quite returned to initial subject that made it relevant, being how an Apple Watch may or may not have actually done something useful, this post has been moved to my This Is No Cave digest giving a quirky deconstruction of the media’s representation of latest news stories.
